How Do Solar Panels Work?

Step 1:  Sunlight Absorption: Solar panels on the roof absorb sunlight. Each panel contains photovoltaic (PV) cells made from semiconductor materials, which convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity.

Step 2:  Conversion to Usable Power: The DC electricity flows from the panels to an inverter, which converts it into alternating current (AC) electricity, which is the standard electrical current used in homes.

Step 3:  Power Distribution: This AC electricity is then routed from the inverter to the home's electrical panel and is distributed to power lights, appliances, and other devices within the home.

Step 4:  Excess Energy Handling: When the system generates more electricity than the home uses, the surplus can be fed back into the electricity grid (if grid-tied), potentially earning credits from the utility company through net metering, or it can be stored in home batteries for later use.

4 Steps of The Rooftop Solar Installation Process

Step 1:  Assessment and Design: Evaluate the suitability of the home for solar installation, including roof integrity, orientation, and energy needs, followed by designing a customized solar panel system.

Step 2:  Preparation Any necessary repairs are made to the roof to ensure a secure installation. The area where the panels will be installed is cleaned, and obstructions such as tree branches are cleared to prevent shading.

Step 3:  Installation: Secure mounts to the roof, attach and connect the solar panels to these mounts, and install the inverter for converting the electricity from DC to AC.

Step 4:  Connection and Activation: After passing final inspections, connect the system to the utility grid for energy offset and activate the system to start generating solar power for the home.

Frequently Asked Rooftop Solar Installation Questions

Most solar panel systems are designed to last for 25 to 30 years, but many can continue to produce electricity at a lower capacity even beyond that time frame.

Properly installed solar panels will not damage your roof. Installers ensure that the mounting system is securely attached and sealed to prevent leaks. If your roof is old or damaged, it's recommended to repair or replace it before installation.Click here to get a free estimate.

Solar panels do require occasional cleaning to remove dust, dirt, and other debris that can affect their efficiency. In most climates, rainfall is sufficient to keep them clean, but they may need additional cleaning in particularly dusty areas.

Most grid-tied solar systems do not provide electricity during outages to protect utility workers from electrical back feed. However, systems with battery backup or special inverters can provide power during grid outages.

Yes, it's possible with a system designed for off-grid living, which typically includes solar panels, battery storage, and a backup generator, but it requires significant investment and planning.  Click here to get a free estimate today.

Savings vary based on the size of your system, electricity usage, local utility rates, and available solar incentives. An installer can provide an estimate based on your specific situation.

There are federal, state, and local incentives that can include tax credits, rebates, and solar renewable energy certificates (SRECs). Specific incentives depend on your location and the policies in place at the time of installation.
